New Oreo doesn’t compare to mint version

Oreos are a big, big part of my family. Ever since I can remember, we’ve always had Oreos around. They’re the Cole family weakness. Honestly, some of my earliest memories are dipping Oreos in a big glass of milk and learning how to properly avoid drippage. My mom prefers the chocolate, my sisters are head over heals for the red velvet cookies and, like my brother, I’m personally a mint Oreo kind of girl. Since Oreos are so huge in our lives, what do you think we did when I announced I had seen something about Choco Chip Oreos on Buzzfeed’s snap story? We FREAKED.

As I write this, I will be trying my first ever Choco Chip Oreo. With a golden, chocolate chip dotted cookie and a light coffee-colored cream, this has been a big lead up for me.

Split it open and lick the icing or eat the whole thing in one bite, I could go either way. Separated, the cookie itself without the cream tastes like the original oreo cookie, which by the way, is delicious. I’m not complaining there.

The cream itself is very different. It’s sweet, but has rich and deep undertones. The taste is hard to lay a finger on exactly, but the closest thing I could think of is that it tastes like really sugary maple syrup on pancakes. Not the hugest fan, but it is still yummy.

Eating the cookie and the cream at the same time is really good as well. The ordinariness of the regular cookie helps out with the sweetness of the cream, making a nice balance. Once the crunchy cookie has left your mouth, though, be prepared for a rapid rush of sugar.

Now comes the milk, the most crucial part of any Oreo experience. This is the most important test. As I took a bite of my soaked cookie, my taste buds were overcome with joy. The maple undertones I had originally tasted were downplayed by the milk. If you are not a total sweet tooth, you can’t handle this cookie. If you are though, try this cookie out. I will say, I feel like I’ve tasted something extremely similar to the milk-soaked Choco Chip Oreo very recently. I can’t seem to identify what it was, but the taste is familiar, and I doubt few people would disagree if they tasted it as well. Iced animal crackers, maybe?

After taking in my fifth and final cookie (three with milk, two without), I can effectively warn everyone: if you eat this cookie, DO NOT devour it in two seconds without a glass of milk. Take it slow and split it open if you eat it dry, but if you shove the dry cookie into your mouth with one bite, you’ll get a headache. After five of them, my brain is starting to feel a little fuzzy. Don’t get me wrong, they’re delicious, but I do not recommend being reckless with these cookies. Eat one or two or even three, now stop. Don’t push it. I’m serious.

Now did they live up to my expectations? In some ways yes, some ways no. When the packaging said Choco Chip, I was thinking more Toll House than Cookie Crisp. Myself being more of a chewy than crunchy person, I guess I was expecting something a little like Chewy Chips Ahoy. Also, I was hoping for a little more chocolate chip and a little less creamy sugar rush. The hard cookie was good, and I was definitely pleased by that. But was I expecting them to be as good as they were with milk? Not at all.

So does this mean I’ve been converted from a mint Oreo girl to the Choco Chip side? Sorry, but nope. I need a snack where I can eat the whole sleeve on a bad day, not one that makes my eyes buzz after number four. Plus, the mint makes the milk-dipping so much better. The Choco Chip made a good effort and carried me through an enjoyable Oreo experience, but I don’t think anything can sway me from my love of the mint Oreo.

Taking SAT on homecoming day

With the end of the week drawing closer, underclassmen have the homecoming football game and dance to think about. Some upperclassmen, however, have the SAT to worry about as well. Senior, Ciara Hampton is going to be taking it for the third time, and then has the whole day and night afterwards all booked.

“The first time I took it I was actually in seventh grade, so that score wasn’t very good… I went to this summer enrichment program at UVA, and you had to take the SAT to be able to get in because it was part of the gifted program,” Hampton says. “I think they might’ve changed the scoring for us, so I don’t really remember what [my score] was, but it wasn’t very good.”

This Saturday, Oct. 1, Hampton is going to see if she can go above and beyond the goals she’s already hit.

“My score’s already high enough to get into JMU, but I want to see if I can get higher and maybe get into UVA,” Hampton says. Last year, Hampton took the essay version, but this year she plans to focus on the math portion.

“I’ve been doing a lot of math problems on my own because that’s the part I didn’t do very well on last time. This year I want to score a lot higher in the math. My english class is preparing me for the english section, so I don’t have to do anything for that,” Hampton said.

After spending several hours testing, Hampton is going to be rushed away to the JMU football game with her family, and then go to homecoming with her boyfriend until later that night.

“I think I have to be there around 7 a.m. Last time I took the SAT it ended at around 2 p.m., but I did the essays,” Hampton said. “After the [JMU] game’s over I’ll go home and get ready, and then I think [we’re] going to have pictures around 6:30 p.m.,” Hampton said.

Hampton feels having such a busy Saturday will be stressful, but as long as she can stay awake she’ll manage it.

“It’s gonna be really hard to get everything done because the SAT is going to be all morning and I’m going be really tired, and then I’m still going to the JMU game and then going to homecoming, so I’m going to be up all day,” Hampton said.

After being postponed due to weather, the Homecoming football game took place on Monday Oct. 3. The Streaks took on the Waynesboro Little Giants and came out with a 25-14 victory.

The first half was back and forth starting off with a touchdown run by Colin Morris and a two point conversion by Roberto Gonzalez-Cavazos. Waynesboro responded by marching down field with a rushing touchdown to make the game 8-7 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams’ rushing defenses held both teams to a scoreless drive. The Streaks played clock management offense to try to set up a scoring drive before the half. Quarterback AC White threw to KeeShawn Perry for a touchdown. The Streaks went for another two point conversion and the pass was completed to Steadman Clark to make the game 16-7 going into the third quarter.

The second half started off with the Little Giants’ drive that led to another touchdown to bring the game back into range. The second half running back Marcus Robinson took over the Streaks offense, getting the ball almost every play and scoring a touchdown. After the touchdown, Robinson ran the ball again for the two point conversion but was stopped just short of the goal line. The Streaks defense didn’t allow any more points, and their offense set up a 31 yard field goal for Mateo Peric. As the clock ran down, the Streaks kneeled to end the game and walked away with a win, improving their record to 3-2
